Retractable hose reel not wall mounted

Retractable Hose Reel Not Wall Mounted

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Details

Most retractable hose reels on Amazon are sold as wall-mounted boxes, which means drilling into siding, brick or a fence. If you rent, if the spigot sits on a wall you do not want to drill, or if you want the reel where the garden is rather than where the faucet is, you need a reel that stands on its own. This guide compares six reels that do not mount on a wall: a ground-spike reel, a wheeled cart reel, two handheld reels and one freestanding reel stand. Every spec comes from the listing, which we opened once on 2026-10-18. Prices and availability change, so check the current price on Amazon before you order.

Quick answer

  • Auto-retract reel on a metal spike, from a hose-system brand: the GARDENA 50 ft reel, model 18604. It is ground-mounted, swivels 360 degrees and needs no wall drilling.
  • Ground spike with a hose-size choice: the SILVEL reel on a metal spike. It also anchors to concrete with a hammer, but its listing disagrees with itself on hose length.
  • Wheeled cart for a long hose: the HOZEREEL trolley cart, 100 ft. Its title says 1/2 inch and its description says 5/8 inch.
  • Small handheld reels for a balcony or a car wash: the OasisTrim 50 ft and the YASHINE 50 ft. Both are light, and both retract by a shaker or crank rather than a wall-mounted spring box.
  • Freestanding stand, not described as retractable: the VEVOR 125 ft stand with a storage basket.

The right reel depends on how long a hose you need, whether you can push a spike into the ground and whether “retractable” has to mean “pulls itself back in”.

How we chose these reels

We searched Amazon for “retractable hose reel not wall mounted”. The first results were nearly all wall-mounted, so we also searched for freestanding, stake, cart and portable reels. We kept six listings whose title or description shows that they stand, roll or carry without a wall bracket. We did not use prices, star ratings or review counts, and we have not tested any reel. Where a listing contradicts itself, we show both numbers. A figure that a listing does not state is marked “not stated”. None of the pages we read states that its hose is drinking-water safe or lead-free, so if that matters to you, ask the seller or choose a hose that states it.

Comparison at a glance

Reel How it stands Hose on listing How it retracts Weight on listing

SILVEL on metal spike Ground spike or concrete anchors, 360 degree swivel Title 5/8 in x 65 ft; size selected 5/8 in x 75 ft; 1/2 in x 90 ft also offered Automatic Not stated
HOZEREEL trolley cart Wheeled cart, free standing, ground mount 1/2 in x 100 ft in the title; 5/8 in in the description Self-rewind 45.7 lbs (size chart)
OasisTrim 50 ft Portable handheld unit 1/2 in x 50 ft Rotatable shaker (hand-crank) 3.2 kg and 5.7 lbs on the same page

VEVOR freestanding Stand with 4 ground spikes, or wall mount Holds up to 125 ft of 5/8 in hose Not described as retractable 22.3 lbs

“Retractable” does not always mean the same thing

The word appears in every title above, but the mechanisms differ. The GARDENA, SILVEL and HOZEREEL listings describe a spring-driven reel that pulls the hose back after a light tug and locks at a length you choose. The OasisTrim and YASHINE listings describe a rotatable shaker that retracts the hose, and the OasisTrim summary line calls it a hand-crank shaker mechanism. The same OasisTrim page also says the hose retracts “quickly and automatically”, so its own text is mixed. The VEVOR listing says “effortless rewind and release” and never says retractable or automatic. If you want a hose that pulls itself in, the first three are the ones whose listings say so.

Match the hose length to your yard

A reel’s hose length is a hard limit, so measure before you pick. Walk the path the hose will take from the spigot to the farthest bed, not the straight line, and measure that. As an illustration, not a listing figure: if the path from the spigot to the far corner is 38 feet, a 50 ft reel covers it with 12 feet to spare for corners. The YASHINE lists 45 ft of outlet hose plus a 5 ft inlet, so its usable run is closer to 45 feet than to 50. If the path is 70 feet, only the 75 ft SILVEL option, the 90 ft SILVEL option or the 100 ft HOZEREEL listing is long enough, and you should confirm the hose size with the seller first.

The six reels

1. GARDENA Automatic Retractable Garden Hose Reel, 50 ft, model 18604 (B08M9X27FV)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 50 ft (the page also offers 66 ft); metal spike base, ground-mounted with no wall drilling; 360 degree swivel mount and rotating ground support; automatic retraction that locks at any length; RollControl technology for slow retraction and an integrated hose guide; UV-resistant housing and frost-proof materials; the listing says no tools are required to install it; limited warranty against material or workmanship defects for private use.

Listing note: the manufacturer section of the page mostly describes the wall-bracket version of the line. It says you can choose between a wall-mounted reel or a reel on a spike, and this listing is the spike version. The title and bullets do not state the hose diameter or the weight.

Best for: a spike-mounted reel from a hose-system brand where the listing spells out the retraction mechanism.

Skip if: your ground is too hard to take a spike, or you need the hose diameter stated before you buy.

2. SILVEL Automatic Retractable Garden Hose Reel on Metal Spike (B0H2Y848WK)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): title says 5/8 in x 65 ft; the size selector shows 5/8 in x 75 ft selected, with 1/2 in x 90 ft also offered; a ground spike for lawns and four anchor points for concrete, installed with a hammer; 360 degree swivel; a 10-pattern spray nozzle; automatic retraction with a lock at the length you choose; UV-protected, frost-proof build.

Listing conflict: the title says 65 ft, the selected size says 75 ft, and one bullet describes storing a 65 ft hose. One bullet also calls the finish “ashy yellow” while the color is listed as Light Grey. Confirm the hose length and color with the seller before ordering. The listing does not state a weight.

Best for: a no-drill reel that can sit on grass or on a concrete pad, with a nozzle included.

Skip if: you need the hose length settled before you buy, since the listing gives three numbers.

3. HOZEREEL Portable Trolley Cart Retractable Garden Hose Reel, 100 ft (B0CZF3W868)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): title says 1/2 in x 100 ft; a wheeled trolley cart described as free standing and ground mount; a size chart that lists, for the 100 ft 1/2 in model, a 6 ft leader hose, a 10-function nozzle, 45.7 lbs and item dimensions of 21.7 x 12.0 x 17.2 in; a slow self-retract system with a lock at any length; a 180 degree pivot bracket; hybrid hose with brass connect fittings; 2 years of service.

Listing conflict: the title says 1/2 in, but the manufacturer section says the reel uses a standard 5/8 in hose. The listing does not settle which one ships, and hose diameter is the first spec most buyers check.

Best for: a long hose on a wheeled base that you roll to the work area and park.

Skip if: you need a light reel. At the stated 45.7 lbs this is the heaviest reel in this group.

4. OasisTrim 1/2 in x 50 ft Retractable Garden Hose Reel (B0FGXXL4Y2)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 1/2 in x 50 ft; working pressure of 116 PSI (8 bar); ABS, PP, PVC and TPR materials; 10 spray patterns; 8 accessories included; a rotatable shaker that retracts the hose; a compact unit carried in one hand.

Listing conflict: the first bullet gives the weight as 3.2 kg, which is about 7 lbs, and the last bullet gives 5.7 pounds (2.6 kg). The page calls the reel retractable and “automatic” in one place and a hand-crank shaker in another.

Best for: a balcony, a car wash or a small yard where a light unit you can carry matters more than a long run.

Skip if: you want a spring-driven reel that pulls the hose in on its own, or a hose you can leave out all year. The listing does not describe cold-weather or UV resistance.

5. YASHINE 50 ft Retractable Garden Hose Reel, 45+5 ft (B0FCF2YHWD)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 5 ft of inlet pipe with 45 ft of outlet pipe; PVC case and PVC hose; a 10-pattern zinc alloy nozzle; a rotatable shaker retracts the hose; 5.1 pounds (2.3 kg), and the summary line says 5 pounds; carried in one hand.

Not stated: the hose diameter, any mounting hardware, and cold-weather or UV resistance.

Best for: the lowest stated weight in the group, for light watering and rinsing.

Skip if: you need a stated hose diameter to judge water pressure, or a unit that stays outside.

6. VEVOR Freestanding Garden Hose Reel, holds 125 ft of 5/8 in hose (B0H2J9BVY8)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): holds up to 125 ft of 5/8 in hose; this size is the freestanding version with 4 ground spikes, and the page also sells wall-mounted versions; Q235 carbon steel with a rust-resistant coating; brass inlet and outlet with a dual-seal design; a 5 ft leader hose; an integrated storage basket for nozzles and tools; a ground stake and bracket kit; 22.3 lbs; partially pre-assembled, with tool-free assembly in about 3 minutes per the description.

Not stated: whether a hose is included, and whether the reel is automatic. The text says “effortless rewind and release” without naming a mechanism, and the title does not say retractable.

Best for: a stand-alone reel that holds a hose you already own, with a basket for the nozzle.

Skip if: your search is specifically for a reel that pulls the hose in by itself. This listing does not claim that.

Spike, cart or handheld: what each gives up

A spike-mounted reel is as close as you get to a wall-mounted one without the wall. It stays where you push it in, swivels, and keeps the hose off the path. The cost is that it needs soil that will take a spike or, in the SILVEL’s case, a surface you can hammer an anchor into. A cart reel moves, but it is heavier and it sits on wheels that may tip when the hose is pulled sideways. A handheld reel is the lightest, but it is a small hose on a small crank, and the listings give no cold-weather or UV rating, so plan to store it indoors. A freestanding stand is the simplest, but it asks you to wind the hose back yourself unless the listing says otherwise.

FAQ

Do I need to drill anything to install these?

The GARDENA and SILVEL listings both describe a no-drill, ground-mounted setup. The HOZEREEL is a wheeled cart. The OasisTrim and YASHINE are portable units. The VEVOR stand installs with ground stakes, and the same page also sells wall-mounted versions, so check the size you select.

Which reel is the lightest?

The YASHINE lists 5.1 pounds. The OasisTrim lists 5.7 pounds in one bullet and 3.2 kg in another. The HOZEREEL lists 45.7 lbs and the VEVOR stand lists 22.3 lbs. The GARDENA and SILVEL listings do not state a weight.

Is a 5/8 inch hose better than a 1/2 inch hose?

The pages do not give a flow figure for either size, so they cannot answer that. They do state the diameter for four reels: OasisTrim 1/2 inch, SILVEL 5/8 or 1/2 inch by size, VEVOR 5/8 inch capacity, and HOZEREEL 1/2 inch in the title and 5/8 inch in the description. The GARDENA and YASHINE pages do not state it.

Can a reel stay outside in winter?

The GARDENA, SILVEL and HOZEREEL listings use UV-resistant, UV-stabilized or frost-proof wording for the casing. The OasisTrim, YASHINE and VEVOR listings do not describe a cold-weather rating. Check the manufacturer’s manual for winter storage instructions before the first freeze.

What does “leader hose” mean?

It is the short hose that connects the reel to the faucet. The HOZEREEL listing gives 6 ft and the VEVOR listing gives 5 ft. The GARDENA and SILVEL listings do not state a leader hose length.

Where to go next

If you would rather move a hose on wheels than on a spike, read the 4-wheel garden hose reel cart guide and the Eley portable hose reel cart. For a heavier build, the heavy-duty garden hose reel guide compares sturdier reels, and the Liberty Garden Navigator rotating reel covers another freestanding design.

The short version

Measure the hose run first, then pick the way you want the reel to stand. For a no-drill reel that retracts by itself, start with the GARDENA or the SILVEL, and settle the SILVEL’s hose length with the seller. For a long hose on wheels, the HOZEREEL, after you confirm 1/2 in or 5/8 in. For a light reel you carry, the YASHINE or OasisTrim, with the retraction and weight notes above in mind.
